De fotografie van Sybren Vanoverberghe (1996) is te overschouwen als een excursie naar een nieuw experimenterend samen-gaan tussen beeld en drager.
De motieven zijn afkomstig van abjecte situaties in woestijnen en industriële sites waarin verval, hét momentum wordt van een vernieuwende artistiek-visuele taal.
Zijn beelden tonen plaats- en tijdloze details van materiële residu’s in de brede context van de teloorgang van de laat-kapitalistische industrialisering én in onherbergzame gebieden met oudheid en fossiele aanwezigheid.
Sybren abstraheert via zijn plaatsloze beelden de tijd tot intrigerende beeld-constellaties.
Fotografisch -technisch test hij zijn beelden op een eigentijdse manier door niet alleen druktechnieken te gebruiken op papier maar ook op aluminium en messing.
De bezoeker wordt (soms) partieel-spiegelend deel van het kunstwerk dat hiermee het statuut van de afbeelding overtreft als een nostalgisch-finale afdruk uit een verleden.
De foto-beelden van Sybren komen sterk tot leven; verscherpen de verbeelding en verlenen de perceptie van de fotografie een vernieuwende dimensie in het hier en nu van de altijd “moderne” toeschouwer.

The photography of Sybren Vanoverberghe (1996) can be regarded as an excursion into a new experimental merging of image and medium.
The motifs come from abject situations in deserts and industrial sites where decay becomes the momentum of an innovative artistic-visual language.
His images show place- and timeless details of material residues in the broad context of the decline of late capitalist industrialization as well as in inhospitable areas of antiquity and fossil presence.
Sybren abstracts time through his placeless images into intriguing image constellations.
Photographically -technically he tests his images in a contemporary way by using printing techniques not only on paper but also on aluminum and brass.
The visitor becomes (sometimes) a partial-mirror part of the artwork that thus surpasses the status of the image as a nostalgic-final print from a past.
Sybren’s photographic images come strongly to life; sharpen the imagination and give the perception of photography an innovative dimension in the here and now of the always “modern” viewer.
